Pokémon (also known as Pocket Monsters in Japan) is a franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1995, and owned by Nintendo. While Game Boy video games, the trading card game and anime series made the franchise famous with children in Japan, it is the first Pokémon film that was advertised here by ANA (Pokémon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back) and the anime short "Pikachu's Vacation" which was released jointly. Both were to be released on July 18, 1998 and ANA's very first Pokemon Jet, JA8965, started revenue service a few days before on July 3 between Itami and Haneda.

The Domestic Jumbo was followed by two 767s in a very similar design. The two sides of the fuselage were different and the cabin was also customized with Pokemons.
