National Grace, Divine Fragrance   国色天香

B-2637
1998-07

This scheme was the very first special livery to appear in the fleet of a Chinese mainland carrier when unveiled on November 4th, 1998 (it was also the very first special scheme to appear on a 737-800 series). The golden peony blossom displayed on the fuselage was a symbol of the airline's conquering spirit. The peony blossom is China's National flower and being the first to display this national symbol on a plane was a matter of pride for the airline.

In Chinese culture, the peony flower and its many colourful varieties and fragrances celebrate beautiful woman in general, hence the "Celestial Beauty" name also frequently associated with this aircraft. It is interesting to note that when Air China wanted to emphasize its position as the national carrier in 2009, the peony blossom was indeed chosen as a source of inspiration for a series of special schemes.
