This design was launched to highlight the openness and warm welcome of Shanghai to its Expo visitors, with a bright and clear rainbow accross the clouds. Some of the world’s main landmarks were scattered in gold colour around the fuselage, indicating the aim of Shanghai to be recognized as a major center of communication as well as the airline's global goals.
The green and orange colours of the Expo completed the scheme. Note the Haibao (jewel of the sea in Chinese) mascot on the engine cowlings.

This fifth Expo 2010 scheme was chosen among 180 designs submitted for the "Eye of the Expo" design competition. The theme of the competition was communication and exchange through the eyes. The winning entry was a blend of the China Eastern red and blue colours with the green and yellow colours of the Expo. Black was added to have the livery look similar to a traditional Chinese drama mask. Altogether these five colours matched the colours of the Olympic rings and reminded us of the worldwide aspect of the Expo.
Note the "Better City, Better Life" titles (top image) were later replaced by standard China Eastern Yunnan titles (bottom image; that is standard for all aircraft flying for the Yunnan subsidiary of China Eastern).

The green and orange colors were those of the Expo. The aircraft was unveiled on January 19, 2010, exactly 100 days before the opening of the World's Fair.

This scheme was the winning entry in an online design submission poll. The rainbow ribbon represented Shanghai’s passion and hospitality. The logo on the engines was the Expo volunteers logo, with their motto "At your service at the Expo" below the registration mark. Additional "Better flight, better trip" titles also highlighted the airline's commitment to Expo visitors.
Note the winning design originally had blue engines and a blue tail with the logo of the expo, however the livery was simplified before being applied to the real aircraft.

Shangha-headquartered China Eastern Airlines was a logical sponsor for the 2010 World Fair. After unveiling this specially painted A340 in March 2006, two specials were added in 2009 with 3 more joining in 2010. All those designs were part of a large advertisement campaign aimed at raising China Eastern brand awareness accross China and the World.
Green and orange were the distinctive colors of the Expo 2010, and in this first design they were blended with the red, gold and blue colours of China Eastern. This A340 was undoubtedly the most widely known of the Expo 2010 liveries, serving the international flagship routes of the airline for almost 10 years, even long after the Expo and until the type was finally retired.
