Continental was the first US airline to conduct a biofuel test flight in January 2009, powering one of the two engines of a 737 with a mix of 50% kerosene and a blend of fuel derived from algae and jatropha. This special scheme was unveiled in March 2010, and was kept after the merger with United, with many tests and commercial flights being performed in the meantime. The livery was then transferred to -900ER N75432.

N75436 was delivered from the factory in Boeing Field to Houston in this retro scheme on June 25, 2009, as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of the airline. The aircraft featured the 1934 "Blue Skyway" scheme. After the merger with United, the design was kept, and later and transferred to another 739 in 2016.

As part of New York City's Millennium celebrations, German-born American illustrator and graphic artist Peter Max designed a very special livery for one of the 777 of Newark-based Continental. The scheme was unveiled on November 15, 1999 in Newark Airport. The two sides were different and the livery was so popular it was kept until early 2008.

Yellow is the official color of the armor branch of the U.S. Army. The yellow ribbon saw renewed popularity in the United States during the Gulf War in the early 1990s. It appeared along with the slogan "support our troops", in the form of yellow ribbons tied to trees, and this one was celebrating the return of the US troops home after Operation Desert Storm in January/February 1991. At least 3 Continental 747 wore these ribbons alongside a Northwest 747, which were at the time partly used by the military to shuttle troops back to the USA.
