Connecting Labuan Bajo to the World

Labuan Bajo (also known as the City of a Thousand Sunsets) is a fishing town located at the western end of the large island of Flores in the Komodo district of the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. The special livery features Komodo dragons, the Manggarai tribe and Phinisi ships. Both AirAsia & Indonesia AirAsia fly to Komodo International Airport which serves Labuan Bajo.

Come to Lake Toba

Lake Toba is a large natural lake in North Sumatra, Indonesia, occupying the caldera of a supervolcano. This special livery featured illustrations of women weaving ulos cloth, typical Kencombrang flowers and the scenic Lake Toba on the fuselage. Ulos is the traditional Tenun fabric of the Batak people of North Sumatra. Titles advertised Tobatenun.com, a local social enterprise aiming at revitalizing and preserving textile traditions from North Sumatra. AirAsia serves the region via Silangit Airport (DTB).

Let’s Go To Belitung

Belitung is an Indonesian island on the east coast of Sumatra in the Java Sea. The main tourist destinations are beaches and offshore islands/islets, hence the yellow/orange and blue colour mix. A number of tourism icons displayed on the livery included Tanjung Kelayang, Lengkuas Island, Muhammadiyah Laskar Pelangi Elementary School Replica, Gurok Pakuk Waterfall, and also the fauna of the Bangka-Belitung province's identity with Tarsius.

AirAsia launched service to H.A.S. Hanandjoeddin International Airport (formerly known as Buluh Tumbang Airport) on the island in October 2019 with service from Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur.

The theme of Thailand's 2019 chairmanship of the ASEAN organisation is "Advancing Partnership for Sustainability". AirAsia has been a partner of ASEAN for a long time and this livery shows its concern about overtourism which has now forced ASEAN countries to strike a balance between welcoming visitors and battling overcrowding, congestion and pollution. Note the decals on 9M-AJW/PK-AZS (second image) have a very light blue background tone in comparison to the ones on HS-BBJ (first image).Thailand 2019 titles disappeared when 9M-AJW was transferred to the Indonesia branch in 2023.

Love Lombok

Indonesia AirAsia added Lombok (West Nusa Tenggara) as its fifth hub in Indonesia in early 2019 after Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan and Denpasar. The livery was the result of an initiative by AirAsia to promote travel to the island in the aftermath of the 3 earthquakes that struck the island in 2018; two new international routes from Perth and Singapore had been launched in the meantime; the scheme featured hotspots Kek Mandalika, Mount Rinjani volcano and Gili Trawangan island.

This scheme was designed in partnership with the Indonesia tourism bureau, again displaying graphic renderings of some of the country's scenery, including a Green peafowl from Java, an Orangutan, a Komodo Dragon. A typical 'Candi Bantar', or temple split gateway, could be seen altogether with volcanoes and a surfer.

Promoting tourism to Indonesia in cooperation with the Wonderful Indonesia official campaign, which is the new name given to the "Visit Indonesia Year..." campaign. This livery showed the Bromo volcano and the stupas of UNESCO World Heritage Site Borobudur. A typical Central Java Kresna 'ringgit' puppet was shown at the rear of the fuselage; Wayang Kulit is a traditional performing arts of puppet-shadow play common in parts of Indonesia. Kresna here relates to Hindouism deity Krishna.
