This design was conceived by a small group of Alaska maintenance technicians to symbolize remembrance, pride, and appreciation to American soldiers and veterans.

Alaska has long been offering complimentary travel to veterans on Honor Flights: as of 2016 the airline had flown more than 600 World War II, Korean War and Vietnam veterans from Alaska, Washington and Oregon states to Washington, D.C. to view their war memorials through the National Honor Flight network and the Last Frontier Honor Flight initiatives.

A second 737 was painted in the scheme in 2019 to allow easier scheduling of the special liveried aircraft on Honor Flights. It was subsequently followed by two more aircraft.

Although it could hardly be seen in the distance, the signatures of 8,500+ Alaska Airlines employees were displayed on this 737 between two green ribbons. A small "Flight Path" logo was visible on the winglets of the 737. Flight Path is the in-house training program which led to the creation of this livery. The small "Flight Path" logo was visible under the cockpit windows on the Horizon Air Dash 8 which joined the 737 later that year.

Unlike the 3 other CRJs, 602QX was retired from the fleet after less than a year in this livery. The "replacing" Dash 8 was delivered in January 2009. In 2012 titles changed to Alaska Horizon and in 2021 the livery was slightly modified with the big "W" replaced by "Go Dawgs!" and the engine nacelle mainly in white.
