In the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf War air travel bookings slumped and to stimulate traffic, BA came up with what became at the time the largest marketing campaign in the industry. Every seat on every international British Airways flight on 23rd April 1991 was given away for free - a total of 50,000 seats. The campaign was launched in February and people already booked on that day were given a voucher for a free flight at another time; full page print ads ran in 67 countries and 37 languages with an entry form. The free draw saw thousands participating and the tickets were sent to the winners. The campaign won 7 awards and indeed stimulated the restart of bookings. At least 20 aircraft carried the special titles with both the Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty featured.
