In 1995 Japanese Domestic carrier JAS teamed up with Akira Kurosawa, one of the most influential filmmakers in the history of cinema. The director of Seven Samourai was also a designer and he created 7 different designs for JAS with the original themes being “Japanese morning” and “7 rainbow colors over the skies of Japan”. The schemes were strictly symetrical and adorned all 16 brand new MD90 of the airline. The first seven aircraft became the "Seven Samourai" while from the 8th delivery, aircraft would again wear the first design and so on, becoming some kind of Shadow Warriors (the name of another Kurosawa movie).

Cooperation with the local tourism boards started in the meantime with two logojets seeing the light of day. This aircraft promoted the mountain resort for Summer activities (port side) and Winter activities (starboard side). Crested Butte is a former coal mining town in Gunnison County, Colorado. The Crested Butte Mountain Resort opened in 1960 after two two men purchased a ranch in the area. The resort's mascot could be seen on the engines.

JAS held a public competition for its 25th anniversary celebrations in 1996 with the aim to find a unique livery for its brand new 777s; it is to be noted as well that Boeing was not really happy with the idea of painting its latest plane in the standard original JAS livery, which was directly derived from Airbus' house livery.
More than 10,000 schemes were submitted (including some online, a first at the time), and 13-year old Masatomo Watanabe from Chitose (near Sapporo Airport) was chosen as the winner by a jury including film director Akira Kurosawa. The rainbow started on the nose and ended on the tail, resulting in an asymetrical design. The first 777 for the airline (JA8977) was transferred to the Japanese register in December 1996 and landed at Haneda on January 28, 1997.
JAS and JAL announced their merger in late 2001 and small JAL stickers were added on all JAS planes in 2002, when the new JAL Arc of the Sun livery was unveiled. JAS became JAL Domestic on April 1st, 2004 and a few of these Rainbow liveries outlived JAS, yet mostly in faded condition.

The port side of the plane advertised the Durango area in Southwest Colorado and its best known attraction, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad heritage railway. The steam-powered trains (with rolling stock dating back to the 1920s and before) link Durango to the historic mining town of Silverton. The starboard side promoted the Purgatory Mountain Resort located in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. The exact origin of the name itself remains unclear.

The Royal British Legion is a British charity providing financial, social and emotional support to members of the British Armed Forces, veterans and their dependants. The poppy is their logo, as WWI created prime conditions for poppies to flourish in battlefields in Flanders and north-west France. The flower became the symbol of remembrance when Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae wrote the In Flanders Fields poem, which was widely shared in the English-speaking world.
Year 1996 also marked the 75th anniversary of the Royal British Legion which probably triggered this first special livery. These decals were applied in time to commemorate Remembrance Day on November 11th, which marked the end of World War I in 1918.

During the Fall of 1996, Ryanair imported Western Pacific' logojet concept in Europe, selling the exterior of its 737s as advertising space. Ryanair entered an agreement with Jaguar and EI-CJE was fully painted to promote the famous car manufacturer, with British racing green and silver blending with the automaker’s big cat. As had happened with Western Pacific's Simpsons Jet, the Ryanair Jaguar plane drew a lot of attention and that helped the airline raise brand awareness in Europe.
