On December 1st, 2021 and for the first time, UA operated a scheduled passenger flight between Chicago O'Hare and Washington DCA with 100% drop-in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for one of the aircraft’s two engines.

This special scheme was unveiled on November 4, 2021, honouring the employees and their dedication during the Covid-19 pandemic. Note the titles are different on the two sides and a large "United Together" belly logo was also added to the aircraft.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

In 2019 United teamed up with the Star Wars franchise to celebrate the release of The Rise of Skywalker in November of that year. The two sides of this first full special at United were different, with the port side being the "Light Side" and the starboard side the "Dark Side" with titles and light sabers painted accordingly. The cabin also featured blue headrest covers bearing the symbol of the Resistance on the left side of the aisle and red ones bearing the First Order symbol on the right side.

Her Art Here: California

Her Art Here was a contest created by United to find and uplift underrepresented women artists by providing them with a chance to have their work painted on an aircraft.

San Francisco resident and artist Tsungwei Moo had her design chosen by the public after an online poll for the California part of the contest. It featured "quintessential" California imagery including sunglasses, palm trees and the Golden Gate Bridge. The artist was formerly a resident at Yosemite National Park focused on ceramics, printmaking and painting.

Her Art Here: New York/New Jersey

Her Art Here was a contest created by United to find and uplift underrepresented women artists by providing them with a chance to have their work painted on an aircraft.

New Jersey native Corinne Antonelli won the public online poll for the New York/New Jersey part of the contest; this plane featured iconic imagery from the two states, including the Red Mill in New Jersey, the New York City skyline and the Statue of Liberty as well as a globe symbolizing the airline's global network from Newark.

Special Olympics 50 Years

The Special Olympics is the world's largest sports organization for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, providing year-round training and competitions for athletes in the US and around the World. United and Special Olympics are long-time partners and the airline celebrated the organization's 50th anniversary with special stickers on this 737.

Prior to the type's retirement at United, special retro titles were added to two Jumbos. Both flew scheduled flights for about a month and were used on special occasions including a fly-by over San Francisco Bay by N121UA on October 8, 2017. A farewell flight (UA747) was organised on November 7, 2017 between San Francisco and Honolulu, the same route on which the airline's first Jumbo -which was also carrying 'Friend Ship' titles- operated when service was launched on July 23, 1970.

Denver Broncos

United is a sponsor of the Denver Broncos football team, and carried the team from Denver to San Jose for the team's game at the Superbowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers on February 7, 2016 (a match they won). Note the orange United titles in place of the standard blue ones.

A320 Friend Ship

This special scheme was unveiled in Chicago O'Hare on April 6, 2011, celebrating the 85th anniversary of this pioneering airline. United can trace its roots back to 1926 when they carried mail under the “Varney Air Service” name. The scheme featured is the "Stars & Bars" from ther 1970s. It was chosen among 5 old schemes by employees and should initially have been worn by a 757.

Note that in 2025 the aircraft got repainted, with the lower fuselage now in a lighter shade of grey.

The Oprah Winfrey Show

The Oprah Winfrey Show was a very famous US talk-show taped in Chicago; the show ran from 1986 to its final season in 2010/11 during which United was a partner. The first flight of the specially-branded plane saw a big on-board giveaway: one lucky passenger was randomly selected to receive enough air miles from United to fly around the world.

Continental was the first US airline to conduct a biofuel test flight in January 2009, powering one of the two engines of a 737 with a mix of 50% kerosene and a blend of fuel derived from algae and jatropha. This special scheme was unveiled in March 2010, and was kept after the merger with United, with many tests and commercial flights being performed in the meantime. The livery was then transferred to -900ER N75432.

N75436 was delivered from the factory in Boeing Field to Houston in this retro scheme on June 25, 2009, as part of the 75th anniversary celebrations of the airline. The aircraft featured the 1934 "Blue Skyway" scheme. After the merger with United, the design was kept, and later and transferred to another 739 in 2016.

A320 MSN1001 was produced in Toulouse and delivered to United on April 15, 1999. The special decal was similar to the one added to A319-111 F-GRHD, the 1000th A320 Family aircraft, also delivered on April 15, 1999. These titles were short-lived. Note the IAE V2500 titles on the engines.

A320 MSN503 (United fleet number 4222 later 4622) was produced in Toulouse and delivered to United on January 19, 1995; it carried red 500th A320 titles on the port side during the delivery ceremony. Very short-lived titles.
