The name of the airline came from the group of former Eastern & Pan Am employees that founded it; they called themselves Kiwis because they were no longer flying, just as Kiwi birds can't fly. This squiggle scheme was created by KIWI Captain Bill Halsey and was a tribute to the airline's employee-owners.
